name: Ranvir Iovan al-Fayruz
canon: Knights Concordance (original)
age: 27
canon point: Five years after the murder of his father.
history:

By birth, Ranvir was intended to be the heir to the duchy of Phirouzeh (Fayruz). (It takes its name from a precious stone mined there.) His mother quickly ailed and died after his birth; by the time he was three, he had a new stepmother, and in time, a pair of half-brothers to dote upon.

That should have been a happy affair, but his stepmother was a grasping, conniving woman, not content to be simply wedded to the Duke and well within his sphere of power; she wanted the whole thing. And Ranvir had absolutely no idea. Part of that was because he genuinely believed that people were fundamentally good. And he trusted her.

He was sent to attend the Academy, a prestigious school upon the continent, so powerful in its own right that it paid allegiance to no single kingdom. As other noble children, he was tested and found to have the powers of Life, Elemental, and Psi magic--though like his father, he was a bit of a rockhead, not good at the latter magic at all. This would come back around to bite him in the rear.

Upon reaching the age of majority--in this case, 21, as his father was hale and hearty, and was simply retiring to spend more time with the family he loved--Ranvir returned home to be celebrated and take his position as the new Duke.

It was that very night that his stepmother poisoned his father; unbeknownst to him, she secreted the bottle and another of the same in Ranvir's quarters, so he would be investigated for the crime. In his shock, horror, and grief, the local Psimage could not break through Ranvir's psyche and see the truth of the matter, and so he was arrested and imprisoned.

It is not easy to keep a determined Knight of any stripe in prison if they do not want to be; the prisons in the dukedom were not meant to truly hold a Knight, in any case. Ranvir escaped and went on the run, determined to clear his name and find out who was the one to slay his father in poison and cold blood.

In five years' time, he is not much further than he was when he began, and the knowledge eats at him. The only thing he seems to have gained is a nemesis, another Knight who works as a bounty hunter and is determined to bring him to justice, which would not truly be just. He hasn't figured out a way to get through to her, yet, that he isn't guilty as he's been portrayed.

abilities: Ranvir is what is classified as a White Knight. All jokes aside, all that means is that his magic is strongest in three particular schools: Psi, Life, and Elemental magic.

Psi is much like psionics. It requires concentration to invoke. Telepathy, empathy, and telekinesis are the usual manifestations of this ability, though empathy and telepathy are far more common. Air magic (which falls under Elemental) can be used like telekinesis in certain situations, though the former requires an invocation and the latter does not. There are rare documentations of clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience and the like, or random ESP, though many Psimages brush this off as nonsense. Ranvir...is absolutely abysmal at telepathy and empathy. Were he more skilled or more powerful, he likely would've been able to clear his name more easily. Alas, he can't break into a human mind, or casually pick up what another feels, except when he tries his very hardest--and even then, it's iffy. It's easier for him to tell what animals are thinking. Where he shines is telekinesis--he has startled bounty hunters pursuing him by stopping arrows and sending them back at his oppressors, as an example.

With Life magic, Ranvir can shapeshift; either minor appearance alterations (which he has used to disguise himself), or full-on shifting into an animal form, though it's limited to beasts he's seen--he's rather fond of a horse shape, for example. Life is also used to heal, powerful enough to make wounds disappear as if they never happened. (Resurrection, however, is a very well-kept secret, and one he is not privy to.)

Elemental magic is used to conjure both elemental power (air, earth, fire, water, and sometimes an admixture of the two--lightning, for example, is 'skyfire', so air and fire) and conjure elemental spirits, if they exist in an area. He prefers to ask them to do favors, offering them his own strength in return; less scrupulous mages command them without recompense.

He is also a trained warrior, skilled in the use of sword and bow, and used to wearing armor.

personality: Once, Ranvir was--not careless, but a bit more carefree than he is now. The world has jaded him, if it hasn't bittered him entirely. People aren't trustworthy; even your closest confidante could have a knife ready to be buried in your breast.

He loved his family with the same devotion his father had; his stepmother's betrayal was a bitter one indeed. He is aware she did it, as she gloated at him about it the night he was jailed. While his half-brothers didn't believe him capable, they were too cowed by their mother to speak in his defense.

Ranvir, really, is tired of all the bullshit, more world-weary than even he can say.

He still has a sense of humor and can be a bit of a prankster, but equally, he can be serious when there's need. He has had to learn (the hard way) to be more methodical and precise than he had to be five years ago.

He also realizes that in some way, he's now damaged--not necessarily without the ability to heal, but where he was more open and trusting before he was framed for the murder of his beloved father, he's changed to a more secretive, sly individual. He's still a good enough person beneath it all to still defend those who need it, and Ranvir is incredibly unlikely to swindle someone or behave in a way he believes is unbecoming of a knight (or a Knight, as chivalry isn't dead in his homeland). Ranvir is still striving to be the man his father believed he could be, though he isn't sure if he's doing it because that is who he is, or only out of respect for a man who's only a memory.

PERSONALITY
While he has been trained to be diplomatic (and more than a bit mercenary, as his family tends towards merchant princedom), Ranvir is a bit embittered, framed as he was for the murder of his beloved father. Without that event weighing heavily on his mind and making him brood, he isn't a terribly serious sort.

HISTORY
Disgraced heir to the Fayruzi dukedom, Ranvir was framed for a murder he did not commit--the murder of Duke Bhanar al-Fayruz, his own father. In truth, it was his bitter and jealous stepmother who did the deed, trying to install one of her sons in Ranvir's position.
